March 12, (THEWILL)- World record holder Tobi Amusan headlines Nigeria’s 50-member track and field contingent for the ongoing 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana. The talented 26-year-old will be looking to add to her remarkable 100m hurdles success on the global stage.
Amusan is joined by fellow international medal winners like Ese Brume in the long jump and Consider Ekanem in the sprints. Brume, a multiple World Championship and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, is expected to challenge strongly for the long jump title, though she will face stiff competition from compatriot Ruth Usoro. The rising 19-year-old Ekanem underlined his potential by clocking a world-leading 10.10 seconds in February.
The men’s sprints look particularly strong for Nigeria with the likes of Raymond Ekevwo, the 2019 African Games 100m champion, Enoch Adegoke, Seye Ogunlewe and Okon Israel all in contention across the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. Amusan will spearhead the women’s sprint challenge alongside talented team-mates Olayinka Olajide and Blessing Ogundiran.
A strong coaching contingent of 12 will oversee Nigeria’s track and field team in Ghana, including Gad Onumaegbu and Deji Aliu. With such an array of talent on show, the West African nation will be confident of securing a sizeable medal haul in Accra across track and field disciplines.
