March 11, (THEWILL) – The self-proclaimed “Special One”, Jose Mourinho, has dropped a major hintô that he is keen to make a swift return to football management.
The Portuguese tactician has been out of work since his dismissal from AS Roma in January 2024, following a disappointing run of results that left the Giallorossi languishing in mid-table.
Speaking to Sky Sports at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix over the weekend, Mourinho made his intentions clear. “I hope so, I want [to manage],” he stated when quizzed about an impending comeback.
However, the 60-year-old insisted that he would not rush into any opportunity, adding: “I have to wait for the right opportunity. I want to work tomorrow if possible, but I don’t want to make the wrong decision.”
Mourinho’s availability has inevitably fuelled speculation of a potential third stint at Chelsea, where he enjoyed tremendous success between 2004 and 2007, guiding the Blues to two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and two League Cups. Significantly, sections of the Stamford Bridge faithful have recently voiced their support for the former manager’s return through chants during matches.
The Portuguese’s CV also boasts a trio of successful English Premier League stints with Chelsea (2005, 2006) and Manchester United (2017), alongside UEFA Champions League glory with Porto (2004) and Inter Milan (2010). Despite his pedigree, Mourinho’s recent tenures at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were plagued by controversy, souring his relationships with both sets of fans.
Mourinho’s managerial prowess remains undoubted, but the location of his next role will be critical in shaping his legacy. Only time will tell if a sensational reunion with Chelsea, or another prestigious appointment is on the horizon for one of football’s most charismatic yet divisive figures.
