March 11, (THEWILL)- The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), have declared a 7-day warning strike to demand the payment of four months of withheld salaries for their members following the 2022 nationwide strike.
The decision was reached during a meeting of the joint action committee of the two unions, held in Akure over the weekend.
SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, who conveyed the meeting resolution to newsmen on Monday, said the warning strike became necessary after several failed attempts to engage with the Federal Government over the issue.
He added, “If nothing is done by the Federal Government to positively address this situation and respond to our previous letters to them, the members of the two unions may be forced to meet soon to take all lawful and stringent decisions on the matter.”
SSANU and NASU had accused the federal government of failure to pay the withheld salaries despite the order of President Bola Tinubu to pay members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who also participated in the 2022 strike.
SSANU, NASU had issued a one-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to pay the withheld salaries about two weeks ago.
