March 11, (THEWILL)- Bayer Leverkusen extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to 10 points with a convincing 2-0 home victory against Wolfsburg, on Sunday. The win snapped a seven-game winless streak for the hosts against their opponents at the BayArena.
With Wolfsburg reduced to 10 men after Moritz Jenz’s second bookable offence, Leverkusen took control through Nathan Tella’s headed opener in the first half. The league leaders dominated possession and created numerous chances with their numerical advantage.
The introduction of Jonas Hofmann from the bench provided an extra spark, as the substitute forced Koen Casteels into a smart save. However, it was Florian Wirtz who sealed the three points, volleying in off the post after a brilliant assist from Exequiel Palacios.
Wirtz had earlier struck the woodwork himself as Leverkusen’s attacking talents came to the fore. Granit Xhaka pulled the strings in midfield, while left-back Alejandro Grimaldo was a constant threat down the flank. Xabi Alonso’s side remain remarkably unbeaten across all competitions this season.
For Wolfsburg, the result extends their winless league run to 10 games under Niko Kovač. The visitors failed to register a shot in the second half as they remained stuck in 13th position in the table.
