Phillips Transfer Saga Takes La Liga Twist As Barca, Atleti Join Race

January 18, (THEWILL) -Manchester City midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, is attracting interest from several English Premier League clubs looking to sign him on loan, but they now reportedly face unexpected competition from La Liga giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

In 2022, Man City doled out £42 million to Leeds United for the 28-year-old England international, but he has struggled for playing time at the Etihad Stadium with less than 1,000 minutes across all competitions. At the moment, Palace, West Ham and Newcastle want Phillips on a temporary deal, but Barcelona and Atletico have entered the race.

Cash-strapped Barca are also keen on a loan but City want a £7 million fee to let Phillips leave for six months. The player himself is seeking regular action to boost his chances of making England’s Euro 2024 squad. However, Barca and Atletico may not guarantee starts despite midfield issues.

Phillips has made just six starts for City as he sits behind stars like Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri. Roy Hodgson admitted Palace would be keen but finances could scupper a move for the Leeds Academy graduate. A decision on Phillips’ future is expected soon, with the transfer deadline on January 31.

There are reportedly up to 10 clubs interested in Phillips. However, his preference seems to be remaining in the English Premier League where he built his reputation during Leeds’ promotion under Marcelo Bielsa.
