February 05, (THEWILL) – An own goal from Federico Gatti was enough to give Inter Milan a 1-0 home victory over Juventus in the Derby d’Italia on Sunday, opening up a four-point lead for the Nerazzurri at the top of Serie A.
In front of a feverish atmosphere at the San Siro, Inter dominated the early possession but found chances hard to come by against an organised Juve defence. The visitors grew into the game and spurned a golden opportunity through Dusan Vlahovic, who failed to capitalise on a gaping goal after a poor first touch. Inter made them pay on the stroke of halftime when Gatti inadvertently chested the ball into his own net amidst confusion in the six-yard box.
The second half saw Inter press for a second, with chances for Dimarco and Calhanoglu, while Gatti went close to making amends at the other end with a drive that whistled past the post. As the game entered its final stages, Juve relied on inspired goalkeeping from Wojciech Szczesny to keep the deficit to just one goal. Inter’s incredible record of not conceding beyond the 76th minute at the San Siro this term held firm.
The 1-0 win makes it six straight home league victories for Inzaghi’s men, five of which have been clean sheets, putting them firmly in the driving seat for the Scudetto. For Juventus, it brings an end to their 19-match unbeaten streak, leaving them with an uphill task if they are to reclaim the Serie A title.
