January 20, (THEWILL) – Chelsea Football Club is closing in on a £35-million signing of Noni Madueke from PSV Eindhoven, as they continue to spend heavily in the January transfer window.
The Stamford Bridge club is also keen on adding a central midfielder to their ranks this month, and have approached rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, regarding a potential swap deal to sign Yves Bissouma, which would see Hakim Ziyech move to north London. However, Spurs are reportedly unwilling to sell in January.
Chelsea has had a £55-million bid rejected for Moises Caicedo by Brighton and Hove Albion and is contemplating loan offers for Barcelona’s Franck Kessie and Juventus’ Weston McKennie.
The signing of Madueke would be the club’s 15th since Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital took over last summer, and they are reportedly still looking to add more players to the squad. The expenses they have packed up so far indicates that Chelsea’s spending is excessive and that a short-term loan for McKennie or Kessie may be a more practical option.
This is especially so if they have plans to return for Fernandez and Caicedo in the summer, while also considering other long-term targets like Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice. There is also the need to be on the right side of the Financial Fairplay regulations to consider.
