December 27, (THEWILL) – Cody Gakpo, the Dutch international, who lit up the World Cup, has agreed to join Liverpool, according to his club, PSV Eindhoven.
Gakpo has been connected with several of Europe’s top teams including Real Madrid and most especially, Manchester United, after becoming an important member of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team.
The 23-year-old has nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie games this season, which is third-highest after 14 games in the league since 1999-2000, behind only the 27 of Van Nistelrooy (1999/2000) and the 25 of former Liverpool player, Luis Suarez, (2009-2010).
Gakpo has been connected with Erik ten Hag’s United for a while, but news broke on Monday, that Liverpool was close to signing the 23-year-old for an initial £37 million (€42 million) cost. It will be a record transfer for PSV, surpassing the previous record of €45m for Hirving Lozano’s move to Napoli. He is expected to sign a contract with the Reds in the January transfer window.
The Dutch club said in a statement: “PSV and Liverpool have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”
