February 22, (THEWILL) – A stunning late winner from Wenderson Galeno secured a hard fought 1-0 victory for Porto over English Premier League side, Arsenal, in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash at the Estádio do Dragão on Wednesday night.
Despite Arsenal being tipped as amongst the favourites for this season’s competition after their scintillating domestic form, it was the Portuguese champions who created the better openings during a cagey first half. Galeno was denied by the woodwork early on, before Porto captain, Nico González and striker, Evanilson, also went close to breaking the deadlock.
With Arsenal forced onto the back foot for long periods by their intense pressing opponents, Dutch winger, Leandro Trossard, spurned their best opportunity of an even second period – volleying high over the bar when found unmarked at the back post.
As the match entered its closing stages locked at 0-0, however, Galeno provided a moment of magic, brilliantly curling home a stunning long range effort with just minutes left to clinch a precious victory for Porto.
The result leaves Arsenal with it all to do when the sides meet again at the Emirates in a fortnight. Although history suggests progression could prove difficult, with Porto having never tasted victory in 18 previous competitive trips to England.
