December 31, (THEWILL) – A gutsy performance saw Tottenham Hotspur claim an important 3-1 home win, against an in-form Bournemouth side on Sunday. The victory keeps Spurs within touching distance of the top four as the season continues in 2024.
An early strike from Pape Sarr and second-half goals from Son Heung-Min and Richarlison, were enough to overcome the Cherries, despite a late consolation from substitute Alex Scott. Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was dealt an early blow as Sarr limped off in tears amid fears he may now miss the Africa Cup of Nations.
Bournemouth had chances of their own, hitting the woodwork through Dominic Solanke and forcing keeper Guglielmo Vicario into several saves. Still, Tottenham’s quality shone through in the end, with South Korean star Son, grabbing his 12th of the campaign before Richarlison continued his hot streak.
The result leaves Spurs just one point behind rivals Arsenal in fifth place with plenty still at stake in the second half of the season. Postecoglou will be demanding no letup from his squad as they approach a hectic schedule in early 2024.
If Tottenham can build on this performance, there is no reason they cannot mount a serious challenge for a return to the Champions League next term.
