February 19, (THEWILL) – Lecce pulled off a stunning upset with a 2-1 victory over Atalanta, putting a serious dent in the latter’s hopes for UEFA Champions League qualification.
The Salentini had already beaten La Dea back in November, and Marco Barone’s high press tactics once again proved successful. Both teams were hit hard by suspensions and injuries, with several key players missing from the competing sides.
Assan Ceesay got Lecce off to a dream start, scoring an impressive goal from 25 metres out. Atalanta fought back in the second half and Ademola Lookman, did have the ball in the net straight but was caught offside. Also, Wladimiro Falcone made several crucial saves to keep the visitors ahead.
However, the Lecce keeper made a costly mistake late in the game, hesitating before clearing and allowing Rasmus Hojlund, to deflect the ball into the net. Despite the late scare, Lecce held on for a famous victory, with Alexis Blin’s free header proving to be the decisive goal.
The result leaves Atalanta in a precarious position in the race for the top four, while Lecce continues their impressive form under Barone. Lecce hosts Sassuolo on Saturday while Atalanta are away to AC Milan.
