September 13, (THEWILL) – Italian midfield maestro, Marco Verratti, has signed for Qatari club Al Arabi after 11 trophy-laden seasons with French giants, Paris Saint-Germain, both clubs announced on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old played a pivotal role during PSG’s era of domestic dominance, winning nine Ligue 1 titles and six French Cups. However, recurring injuries and disciplinary issues have limited his influence in recent seasons.
In a statement, PSG President, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, thanked Verratti for his service, saying he “played a major role in our great history” and “will always be a Parisian”.
The transfer fee was not disclosed but is rumoured to be around €50 million. For PSG, it represents a sizable return on a player who had fallen down the pecking order.
Verratti follows Brazilian Philippe Coutinho in trading European football for the Qatari Stars League this summer. After successfully hosting the 2022 World Cup, the Gulf nation continues to boost its footballing credentials by attracting elite talent.
