March 09, (THEWILL)- Manchester United claimed their fifth consecutive English Premier League victory over Everton with a 2-0 win at Old Trafford on Saturday. The result extends Everton’s wretched winless run in the league to 11 matches.
The home side took the lead inside 12 minutes when James Tarkowski’s rash challenge on Alejandro Garnacho resulted in a penalty, coolly converted by Bruno Fernandes. Despite a shaky start, United doubled their advantage before half-time as Garnacho was felled by Ben Godfrey and Marcus Rashford scored from the spot.
Everton had chances of their own in an open first half, with Dwight McNeil going close on several occasions and James Garner stinging Andre Onana’s palms. However, they could not find a way past the United goalkeeper after the break.
The visitors knew they needed the next goal but it was United who looked more threatening, with Garnacho flashing over and Fernandes forcing a good save from Jordan Pickford. Abdoulaye Doucoure went closest for Everton but his effort was well blocked.
The match became more subdued towards the end as United were grateful to end a run of back-to-back League defeats. For Everton, the same goalscoring problems persist, leaving their five-point cushion above the relegation zone looking increasingly precarious.
