March 09, (THEWILL)- On Friday night, Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal struck a sublime late goal to secure a 1-0 home victory against a resilient Mallorca side. The win keeps the Catalan giants within striking distance of leaders Real Madrid, trailing by just five points with 61 points from 28 games.
Yamal’s moment of magic arrived in the 73rd minute when the 16-year-old curled a brilliant shot into the top left corner from the edge of the area, netting his fourth league goal of the season.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Barcelona had to remain patient against a well-organised Mallorca defence. Ilkay Gundogan missed a prime opportunity to open the scoring from the penalty spot in the 24th minute when his effort was saved by the impressive Predrag Rajkovic.
Xavi Hernandez’s side had to dig deep for the three points. The victory provisionally moves Barcelona into second place, two clear of Girona and within touching distance of Real Madrid ahead of their clash with Celta Vigo on Sunday.
Xavi will now turn his attention to Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League last-16 second leg against Napoli, with the score delicately poised at 1-1.
