March 04, (THE WILL)- Inter Milan took a massive step towards their first Serie A title since 2010, as they overcame Genoa 2-1 at the San Siro on Monday night. The victory extends their unbeaten league run to 21 games and moves them 15 points clear at the summit.
The hosts struggled to get going in the first half-hour, with Genoa creating the best early chance through Mateo Retegui’s header that was brilliantly saved by Yann Sommer. However, Inter took the lead on 30 minutes when Kristjan Asllani fired home after good work from Lautaro Martinez.
Referee Giovanni Ayroldi then awarded Inter a penalty just before half-time when Nicolo Barella was fouled in the box, and Alexis Sanchez made no mistake from 12 yards to double the advantage.
Genoa halved the deficit early in the second period through Johan Vasquez’s well-struck volley. They thought they had equalised midway through the half when Vitinha found the net, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.
Despite Genoa’s spirited fightback, Inter saw out the game professionally to edge ever closer to a 20th Scudetto. Lautaro Martinez and co can start the celebrations early if they can keep this winning run going next weekend away at Bologna.
