February 16, (THEWILL) – Reactions have trailed proposals by the Federal Government to remove its financial assistance for electricity in the country.
This move, as made known, recently, has thrown Nigerians into a deep anxiety as it would jeopardise many areas of daily income by the citizens.
Hoteliers, shop owners, artisans and other residents who make use of electricity supply for their daily business have expressed worry that there would be an increment in electricity tariffs if the government removes the subsidy as it has announced.
A hotelier in Owerri, Uchenna Njoku, described electricity as a social service that helps the well-being of Nigerians in various ways.
“Electricity is the only thing we are relying on, in this critical time. If the government removes the subsidy, how else can we cope?”, he asked.
A Saloon owner; Chioma Ngoka, Andy Nwogu and the former Senior Legislative Aide to an ex-House of Representatives member for Orlu, Orsu & Oru East; Hon. Unamma Olemgbe, pleaded with the Federal government not to remove the subsidy and that it is not the right time to take such a decision.
