March 13, (THEWILL) – The 23-year-old Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface, is poised for a comeback to action with Bayer Leverkusen in April, according to manager Xabi Alonso.
The highly-rated forward has been sidelined for three months due to an adductor injury, last featuring in Leverkusen’s 4-0 victory over Bochum in December.
Since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Royale Union SG last summer, Boniface has made an immediate impact, registering an impressive tally of 16 goals and 8 assists across all competitions. His stellar performances earned him a well-deserved call-up to Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad, although the injury ultimately forced his replacement by Terem Moffi.
In a recent interview with Bild, Xabi Alonso expressed his optimism regarding Boniface’s recovery, stating: “His (Boniface) development is very good; the recovery is going in the right direction. That’s very positive. We expect Boniface soon, I don’t know, but it won’t be until May, maybe April, and that’s very good for us, having Boniface back.”
The Bayer Leverkusen manager further commended Boniface’s dedication and professionalism during his rehabilitation process, highlighting, “Boni works very well with great professionalism, twice a day. We need players who have the desire to be back.” Leverkusen, currently leading the German Bundesliga table with 67 points from 25 games, are yet to lose a single match this season.
Interestingly, Arsenal is reportedly looking to bolster their attacking options in the upcoming summer transfer window, with Nigerian internationals Victor Osimhen and Boniface among the shortlisted potential strikers.
