January 14, (THEWILL) – French striker, Karim Benzema, has reportedly been excluded from Al-Ittihad’s upcoming training camp in Dubai, according to sources close to the Saudi Arabian club. The former Real Madrid star has allegedly missed several training sessions and club events in recent weeks.
Benzema was expected to report for training last Friday, in Jeddah, along with the rest of the Al-Ittihad squad. However, the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner failed to show up, which was the last straw for manager Marcelo Gallardo. He has taken the decision not to include Benzema in the club’s travelling party for their Dubai camp.
This is not the first time Benzema’s commitment has been questioned since joining Al-Ittihad in 2023. Reports indicate he skipped three training sessions before the Saudi Pro League’s winter break. His volatile relationship with former coach Nuno Espirito Santo was also well-publicised before the Portuguese’s November sacking.
There is a growing feeling in Saudi Arabia that Benzema has so far failed to live up to expectations at Al-Ittihad. He faced strong criticism for his performance in the 5-2 defeat to rivals Al-Nassr and ex-teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. Benzema failed to score as Ronaldo netted twice in the December clash.
With his immediate future now unclear, European clubs may sense an opportunity to move for the 36-year-old striker before the January window closes. For now, though, his exclusion from the Dubai camp means Benzema cannot officially join up with Al-Ittihad.
