August 12, (THEWILL) – In a dominant 4-0 victory over Charlotte FC, Lionel Messi continued his blistering start to life in MLS by scoring his eighth goal in just five games as Inter Miami booked their spot in the Leagues Cup semifinals.
Despite being less involved than usual in the opening half, Messi’s mere presence opened up space for his teammates to thrive. Josef Martinez converted a penalty in the 12th minute to get Inter Miami started, before Robert Taylor extended the lead with his own goal before half-time.
Charlotte FC failed to make the necessary tactical adjustments at the break and were made to pay. An own goal put Inter Miami up 3-0 before Messi finished off the rout with a late strike to cap off another dazzling display.
Inter Miami’s total team performance was far too much for last-placed Charlotte to handle. Now through to the final four of the Leagues Cup, Gerardo Martino’s side will take on the Philadelphia Union next, after the latter edged past Queretaro 2-1 in extra time.
Messi’s introduction to MLS has been nothing short of electric, scoring crucial late goals and bringing teammates into the attack to remind everyone of his otherworldly talents. Charlotte became the latest side to fall victim to Messi’s brilliance, as he continues to set the league alight.
