November 25, (THEWILL) – Senegal became the first African country to secure a win as they beat Qatar, the World Cup hosts 3-1, putting their opponents in danger of leaving the competition early and setting another unenviable record.
A late effort on Friday, at the Al Thumama Stadium, failed to help the Gulf nation secure a crucial victory after they were defeated 2-0 by Ecuador in their opening Group A match.
Senegal had the upper hand with goals from Boulaye Dia and Famara Diedhiou, but Qatar’s first World Cup goal from Mohammed Muntari gave them hope of a late rally. However, Senegal sealed the victory six minutes from the end, making sure that the belated push was too little and too late for the home team.
Senegal, therefore, takes three points going into the final group game and Qatar will be closely watching the group’s next game because they might be eliminated if the Netherlands wins. They play the Dutch in their last group match, while Senegal will take on Ecuador.
