December 22, (THEWILL) – Uruguayan icon Luis Suarez has signed a one-year contract with MLS club Inter Miami CF, the team announced on Friday. The deal includes an option to extend through 2025.
Suarez will reunite with former FC Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, who signed with Inter Miami over the summer. The two played together at Barcelona from 2014 to 2020, helping the club win La Liga four times and the 2015 UEFA Champions League. Since Messi’s arrival, Inter Miami has seen a surge in fan interest and won their first-ever trophy, the Leagues Cup.
The 36-year-old Suarez joins Inter Miami after most recently playing for Grêmio in Brazil. He has bounced around clubs since leaving Barcelona in 2020, including Atletico Madrid in Spain and Nacional in Uruguay. While past his prime, Suarez still draws major attention and scores goals.
Inter Miami owner, Jorge Mas, has aggressively pursued high-profile players to boost the club’s profile since joining MLS as an expansion team in 2020. The signings of Messi and now Suarez take the hype to another level ahead of next season.
With two international superstars leading the attack, expectations will be high for Inter Miami to compete for an MLS Cup in 2023. However, the potential strike partnership of Messi and Suarez will be sure to draw plenty of eyeballs, which the club management will definitely welcome.
