March 13, (THEWILL) – Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has dismissed suggestions that Michael Edwards’ return to the club as Fenway Sports Group’s chief executive of football will influence his decision to leave at the end of the 2023/2024 season.
The 56-year-old German spoke to Edwards, with whom he shared a successful relationship during the latter’s tenure as Liverpool’s sporting director until 2022, but remained steadfast in his plan to depart Anfield.
When asked about the potential impact of Edwards’ appointment, Klopp stated, “We had that conversation, (but) that is not a subject to talk about. Can you imagine I changed my mind? It’s like, ‘Never ever another club in England’ and next year I signed for our neighbours. I think before I say these things.”
The influential manager, who has led Liverpool to numerous trophies since he arrived in 2015, emphasised his unwavering commitment to the club’s future success. “For me, it is the best club in the world and I am still leaving. I just want this club to do as well as possible with the best people in charge and Michael is a top choice,” he added.
Klopp acknowledged his discussions with Edwards covered various topics, including player assessments and potential areas for improvement. However, he remains focused on Liverpool’s pursuit of multiple trophies this season, including the English Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Europa League.
Looking ahead to Thursday’s Europa last-16 second leg against Sparta Prague, with Liverpool leading 5-1 from the first leg, Klopp urged his players to maintain their consistency. “The boys have been quite consistent in recent weeks but it’s a long run-in in all competitions and we are not even close to the finish line,” he said.
