August 07, (THEWILL) – General Abdourahamane Tchiani’s led military junta in Niger Republic has ordered the immediate closure of the country’s airspace.
This is coming as the seven days ultimatum issued by ECOWAS for return to constitutional authority expired on Sunday night.
ECOWAS had, last Sunday, issued the military junta seven days ultimatum to hand over power to ousted President Mohamed Bazoum or face possible military intervention.
In a statement on Sunday, General Tchiani announced the closure of the country’s airspace. He warned that any attempt to violate it would meet with an “energetic and immediate response”.
“Faced with the threat of intervention, which is becoming clearer through the preparation of neighbouring countries, Niger’s airspace is closed from this day on Sunday…for all aircraft until further notice,” he said.
