March 12, (THEWILL)- The European Union (EU) and the International Centre for Energy, Environment and Development (ICEED), have forged a new partnership with the Borno State government on environment preservation to mitigate the destructive effects of climate change.
The partnership is to, subsequently, ensure food security and facilitate proper conflict management among the mainly agrarian communities of the state.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Ahmadu Umara, rolled out the aims of the partnership at a meeting of the partners in Maiduguri, to develop an advocacy and communication strategy for the Borno State Climate Change Coalition.
He said the meeting was organised to harmonise efforts to rid society of the effects of climate change and enhance adaptive capacity within the state.
The permanent secretary said the partnership is in line with the 25-year Development Plan and 10-year Strategic Framework of the state government.
He said, “Considering the nexus between Sustainable Development Goals SDGs and the global goal of achieving net zero emissions, stakeholders in Borno state have formed an alliance to create awareness on climate change.”
Ahmadu said officials from the Borno State Ministry of Environment, stakeholders and non-governmental organisations are collaborating to develop a communication and advocacy strategy for the State Climate Change Response Plan.
In his remarks, the Project Coordinator, Borno Climate Change Programmes, Mr Okechukwu Ugwu, said the Borno State Climate Change Coalition recognises the urgent need to address the effect of climate change on the state and its residents.
He charged the stakeholders to proffer lasting and durable solutions to climate change in the state.
“Let’s brainstorm, let’s come up with documents that can be implemented with a view to solving the current climate crisis we are witnessing in the state”, Ugwu charged the participants at the meeting.
“We need to ensure that climate action is mainstreaming in all our activities,” he observed, adding, “With that, we can ensure climate resilience in Borno state.”
Our Correspondent reports that the stakeholders are to scale up and sustain environment preservation campaigns with one-to-tell-other methods to be operated by residents of the communities across the state.
