March 13, (THEWILL)- The Police Commissioner in Kano State, Hussaini Gumel, has directed Operational Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), to “intensify and emplace robust patrols around all the vulnerable, primary, secondary schools and all tertiary institutions in the state.”
The directive is contained in a statement issued to newsmen by the Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on Wednesday.
Kiyawa said the measure is in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on ensuring the safety of schools under the Safe Schools Initiative.
He said the directive is geared towards improving the security of lives and property, most especially safety of schools and students.
“The measure is aimed at ensuring the safety and security of students, teachers, and staff and to boost the overall educational sector in the state.
“The intention of increasing presence of police personnel in these areas is to further deter criminal activities and provide a secure environment conducive to learning and teaching.
“In furtherance, the Commissioner of Police urges members of the public, particularly school administrators, teachers, parents, and students, to cooperate fully with the Police and other security agencies and report any suspicious activities promptly so that we can collectively work towards creating a safe and secure educational system that nurtures the growth and development of our future leaders”, he said.
The police spokesman also quoted the commissioner as thanking the people of the state for their support, cooperation and understanding.
He urged them to keep reporting any suspicious movement of persons or items to the nearest Police Station.
