March 12, (THEWILL) – Celta Vigo have parted ways with manager Rafael Benitez after a poor run of results that has left the Galician club battling relegation.
The 63-year-old took over at Celta in the summer of 2023 but has been dismissed following a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Real Madrid over the weekend.
Celta Vigo released a statement thanking Benitez for his efforts during his tenure. “Our most sincere thanks to Rafa Benitez and his coaching staff for the involvement, honesty and professionalism they have shown since their arrival at the club. Best of luck and success in the future,” the club said on their official social media channels.
The final straw appears to be Celta’s atrocious form over their last 10 league games, with just three wins, six losses and a solitary draw. This dismal run has seen them plummet down the La Liga standings into 17th position, just two points above the relegation zone with 12 games remaining.
Benitez’s sacking continues a difficult period for the experienced Spanish manager. After winning the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, he has endured struggles at Real Madrid, Newcastle United and now Celta Vigo. The quest to find his next role begins immediately.
Celta Vigo will be hoping a new manager can spark an upturn in fortunes and guide them to La Liga survival as the 2023/2024 season enters its crucial final weeks.
