March 14, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid produced a noteworthy late comeback before prevailing on penalties to knock Inter Milan out of the UEFA Champions League in a dramatic second leg encounter at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The Spanish side trailed 1-0 from the first leg in Milan and fell further behind when Federico Dimarco fired Inter ahead on the night. However, Antoine Griezmann equalised before half-time to leave the tie finely poised.
After the break, Memphis Depay looked to have won it for Atletico with a brilliant turn and finish to put them 2-1 up on the night and level the aggregate score at 2-2. Rodrigo Riquelme then had a golden chance to seal victory in normal time but blazed over from close range.
With no further scoring, the match went to a tense penalty shootout. Jan Oblak was the hero, saving from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen, while Lautaro Martinez missed for Inter to send Atletico through after a 3-2 shootout win.
Diego Simeone’s men advance to the quarter-finals as their impressive home form at the Metropolitano continues, while Inter’s hopes of avenging last season’s final defeat are over despite an excellent domestic campaign so far.
