March 14, (THEWILL) – At the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday, American Emma Navarro upset world number two Aryna Sabalenka, knocking her out in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. The 23rd-seeded Navarro played relentless tennis, absorbing Sabalenka’s powerful serve and converting four of five break-point opportunities to record the biggest win of her young career.
The 22-year-old Navarro raced out to an early lead, grabbing the opening set 6-3. However, the reigning two-time Australian Open champion Sabalenka raised her level in the second set, levelling the match at one set apiece. The resilient Navarro kept her composure in the decider, fending off a break point and smashing a forehand winner for a crucial 4-1 lead.
The unflappable American maintained her high level in the closing stages, breaking the hard-hitting Belarusian for a fourth time on match point. Navarro’s stunning victory sets up a tantalising quarter-final showdown against either Greek 9th seed Maria Sakkari or Frenchwoman Diane Parry.
“I’m feeling really good,” a beaming Navarro said in her on-court interview. “Aryna made it really tough but I played some good tennis in the big moments. Thanks to everyone for the great support today.”
This breakthrough performance in Indian Wells further solidifies Navarro’s status as one of the brightest young talents on tour.
