March 14, (THEWILL) – Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League with a 2-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night. Jadon Sancho’s early strike and a late Marco Reus goal sealed a 3-1 aggregate win for the Bundesliga side at Signal Iduna Park.
The home team took the lead after just three minutes when Sancho fired home from 20 yards out after PSV failed to clear their lines. Former PSV striker Donyell Malen went close to doubling the advantage but was denied by goalkeeper Walter Benitez.
PSV had chances of their own in the first half through Guus Til, Johan Bakayoko and Luuk de Jong but failed to level the tie. Substitute Hirving Lozano struck the outside of the post after the break as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.
Niclas Fullkrug thought he had made it 2-0 midway through the second period only for VAR to rule his headed effort out for offside. However, captain Reus made sure of Dortmund’s progress in injury time with a cool finish to book their place in the last eight.
Despite an unbeaten Eredivisie campaign, PSV’s European adventure ends in the last 16 while Dortmund march on in their quest for a first UEFA Champions League crown since 1997.
