March 13, (THEWILL)- Arsenal booked their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, after a hard-fought penalty shootout victory against Porto at the Emirates Stadium, on Wednesday night. With the aggregate score level at 1-1 after extra time, the Gunners prevailed 4-2 on penalties to punch in their slot in the last eight.

The game started brightly for the visitors, who enjoyed some promising possession in the first half and created several chances. Porto striker Evanilson was a constant threat, forcing David Raya into a fine save with a stinging effort. However, it was Arsenal, who broke the deadlock through Leandro Trossard, who coolly slotted home after a delightful through ball from Martin Odegaard.

Despite Arsenal having a goal ruled out for a foul in the second half, the hosts looked the more likely to score the decisive second goal. Substitute Gabriel Jesus was denied by a smart save from Diogo Costa as the match headed into extra time.

With neither side able to find a winner after 120 minutes, the tie went to a dramatic penalty shootout. Arsenal scored all four of their spot-kicks, with Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Trossard all converting. Raya was the hero, saving Wendell and Galeno to seal a 4-2 shootout victory for the Gunners.

The result means Arsenal progressed to the UCL quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, continuing their impressive form under Mikel Arteta this season. The draw for the last eight will take place on Friday.
